L'Enquête Démographique et de Santé 1998 est la seconde EDS réalisée au Cameroun après celles de 1991.

L'enquête couvre tous les membres du ménage, toutes les femmes âgées de 15-49 ans vivant de façon permanente dans les ménages sélectionnés, ou présentes la nuit précédant l'enquête (résidentes habituelles ou visiteuses). De plus, dans un ménage sur deux, tous les hommes de 15 à 59 ans (résidents habituels ou visiteurs) ont été enquêtés.

Compte tenu de la taille variable de chaque strate (Yaoundé/Douala, Autres Villes et Rural), constituant chacune un domaine d'études, différents taux de sondage ont été appliqués à chaque strate et les résultats ont été pondérés au niveau national. Par contre, l'échantillon est auto-pondéré au niveau de chaque domaine.
Au total, 5 011 logements ont été sélectionnés pour l'enquête ménage: 4791 ont été identifiés et parmi ceux-là, 4697 ont pu être enquêtés avec succès, soit un taux de réponse de 98,0 % (tableau 1.2). En ce qui concerne les femmes de 15-49 ans, sur les 5760 éligibles pour l'enquête individuelle, 5501 ont pu être enquêtées, soit un taux de réponse de 95,5 %. Ce taux de réponse est satisfaisant puisqu'il est supérieur à celui proposé dans le plan de sondage (95 %). S'agissant des hommes, le taux de réponse de 91,3 % est également supérieur à celui prévu par le plan de sondage (90 %) pour l'enquête homme. En effet, sur les 2806 hommes âgés de 15-59 ans identifiés dans les ménages, 2562 ont été enquêtés avec succès.
Les erreurs de mesure sont celles associées à la mise en oeuvre de la collecte et de l'exploitation des données telles que l'omission de ménages sélectionnés, la mauvaise interprétation des questions de la part de l'enquêtrice ou de l'enquêtée, ou les erreurs de saisie des données. Bien que tout le possible ait été fait pour minimiser ce type d'erreur pendant la mise en oeuvre de l'EDSC-II, il est difficile d'éviter et d'évaluer toutes les erreurs de mesure.
