The 1977 census follows the 1966 population census. The 1966 census was the first census to be carried out after the country became an independent state, and it became a de facto census, but an attempt was made to count Malawians who were abroad by asking each house about their relatives outside the country.

About 7000 enumerators took part in the survey and a detailed manual for the census (available as external resources) was made available.
Data processing of the census results was done by the Malawi Government Computer (ICL 2903) which is under the Ministry of Finance, Data Processing Unit.Initially some computing work in terms of testing tabulation programs was done on the Malawi Railways' and Portland Cement's Computers.

Use of the dataset must be acknowledged using a citation which would include:
- the Identification of the Primary Investigator
- the title of the survey (including country, acronym and year of implementation)
- the survey reference number
- the source and date of download
