L'Enquête Démographique et de Santé 1996 est la 2eme enquête de type EDS au Bénin. La première a été réalisée en 1996.

L'enquête a couvert tous les membres du ménage : toutes les femmes âgées de 15 à 49 ans présentes dans le ménage sélectionné, les maris âgés de 20 à 64 ans et tous les enfants de moins de 5 ans.

La supervision a été assurée par l'équipe ayant encadré les séances de formation. Toutes les deux semaines, des missions de supervision étaient effectuées sur tout le territoire national pour recenser les problèmes qui se posaient au personnel de terrain et collecter les questionnaires remplis en vue d'alimenter l'atelier de saisie. Dans la mesure du possible, des solutions étaient apportées aux problèmes par les superviseurs. Dans le cas contraire, les problèmes étaient étudiés au cours de réunions périodiques à Cotonou et les solutions retenues étaient diffusées au niveau de tout le personnel de terrain. La saisie des données se déroulant en même temps que les travaux de terrain, des tableaux de qualité des données sont produits au fur et à mesure de la collecte. L'analyse de ces tableaux a permis non seulement d'identifier les erreurs de terrain et de procéder à leur correction mais également de redynamiser l'équipe de supervision dans son rôle.
