Ethiopia stands first in its livestock population in Africa. Livestock production is a part and parcel of Ethiopia's agriculture. It is the livelihood, source of security and supplementary cash income of rural agricultural households. The nation has not fully exploited its huge livestock resource and the actual benefit of such a considerable national wealth is very limited to the national economy. Currently there is a rapid growing demand for livestock data. Government, non-governmental organizations and private users need accurate livestock data for policy formulation and investment decisions. Since 1980/81 (1973 E.C.) the Central Statistical Agency has been conducting Agricultural Sample Survey on Annual basis to provide information on certain agricultural characteristics. The bulletin, which is Volume II of the Agricultural Sample Survey, 1996/97 (1989 E.C.) (which you will find attached to external resource part) presents the objectives of the survey, coverage and content of the survey, sample design, training of field staff, field organization, method of data collection, some basic concepts and definitions and survey results of Livestock, Poultry and Beehives, Furthermore, it presents the appendices that comprise survey questionnaire, number of EAs sampled and actually covered, number of households planned to be covered and actually covered, estimation procedure, standard errors and coefficient of variation by type for livestock, poultry and beehives. Like wish, standard errors and coefficient of variation for cattle, sheep and goats by age and purposes are presented in the appendix at national and regional level. OBJECTIVES OF THE SURVEY The general objective of the agricultural sample survey was to collect basic quantitative information on the nation's agriculture that is considered essential for development planning and socio-economic policy formulation. In particular, the objective of the survey were to estimate the total cultivated land; total production and yield of major crops per hectare; crop land uses (temporary and permanent); number of livestock and poultry by type, purpose, sex and age; number of beehives and honey production in the private peasant holdings for the country, regions and group of zones. Ethiopia The 1996/97 (1989 E.C.) annual agricultural sample survey was designed to cover sedentary rural agricultural population in all regions of the country. Urban and nomadic areas were not included in the survey. A total of 56 zones and 376 weredas were covered in the survey. A total of 705 EAs in the country were planned to be covered by the survey. But 4 of the sampled EAs were closed due to various reasons and the survey covered 701 EAs successfully. Agricultural Household/Holder/Livestock Households, who were engaged in growing crops and/or breeding and raising livestocks in private or in partnership with others in the selected sample. Sample survey data [ssd] The scope of Livestock Sample Survey included: - Identification particulars: Geographic area information; Holder sex, education status family size and type of holding - Livestock population and livestock products: This section covered information regarding number of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, mules, donkeys, camels by age and purposes; poultry, honey production per beehive, milk and egg; livestock diseases and treatments; number of births, purchases, sales, slaughters, and deaths of livestock; livestock diseases, treatment and vaccination ; and livestock feeds utilization. Central Statistical Authority A two- stage stratified sample design was used for the 1996/97 (1989 E.C) Agricultural sample survey. In three regions, namely, in Amhara, Oromiya and Southern Nations and Nationalities peoples' Region, groups of contiguous zones were treated as strata/reporting levels of the survey results. In the remaining regions, the reporting levels were the regions themselves. The primary sampling units in all strata were Enumeration Areas (EAs). A fixed number of sample EAs was determined for each stratum/reporting level based on population size of the stratum and cost consideration. The overall sample number of EAs in a stratum was proportionately allocated to zones/special weredas within the stratum to their population size. From within each stratum sample EAs were selected with probability proportional to size, size being the total number of households of EAs as obtained from a fresh list of households. From each sampled EA, 25 agricultural households were selected systematically without replacement. The livestock survey questionnaires were administered to all agricultural holders in the sampled 25 agricultural households. Face-to-face [f2f] The 1996-1997 Livestock Sample Survey used structured questionnaire to collect data on livestock and livestock characteristics. The questionnaire is organized in to two parts. Part 1: Identification particulars: This part contains area identification of the selected household. It dealt with area identification of respondents such as Region, Zone, wereda, Farmer's association, Enumeration area household number, holder number, and type of holding. Part 2: Livestock population and products: This part of the questionnaire dealt with number of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, mules, donkeys, camels by age and purposes; poultry, honey production per beehive, milk and egg; livestock diseases and treatments; number of births, purchases, sales, slaughters, and deaths of livestock; livestock diseases, treatment and vaccination ; and livestock feeds utilization. The questionnaire used in the field for data collection purpose was prepared in Amharic language. A copy of the questionnaire translated to English is attached as external resource. FIELD ORGANIZATION The branch statistical office heads of the Central Statistical Agency, field's supervisors, enumerators expects from head office, other support staff and drivers were involved in the operation of the survey. For all enumerators, the necessary survey equipment such as compass, protractor, ruler, measuring tapes, poles, ropes, sample bags, … etc. were made available for the survey. Moreover, about 68 vehicles were put on the operation to facilitate the field work. TRAINING OF FIELD STAFF At the outset all relevant materials, like equipment were procured and questionnaires and instruction manuals were prepared. Then the training program for the field staff was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, trainees, i.e. experts from the head office, branch statistical office heads and some of the field supervisors were given training for one week at the head office. Those trained in the first stage conducted similar training for one week at the head office. Those trained in the first stage conducted similar training for field supervisors and enumerators about in all for 10 days in all the 15 branch offices all over the country. During the training, the field staff were given detailed class room instruction on the purpose of the survey, concepts and definitions of terms used, methods of area measurement, method of crop cutting, interviewing procedures,… etc. The training sessions included profound field practices with regard to data collection. METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION In each selected EAs a fresh list of households was prepared and then agricultural households were identified from the list of households. From these identified agricultural households, 25 agricultural households were selected using a systematic sampling technique. Thus all agricultural holders belonging to the selected agricultural households were interviewed and the appropriate data were collected. The reference date for enumerating livestock, poultry and beehives was January 1st of 1997. EDITING, CODING AND VERIFICATION The editing and coding instruction manuals were prepared and printed. Then intensive training was given to the editors for a day. About 20 editors-coders were involved to accomplish the editing and coding tasks. In due course, one professional staffs was assigned to facilitate the editing and coding activities. In addition, the edited and coded questionnaires were checked by 8 technicians and the verification was 100. DATA ENTRY, CLEANING AND PROCESSING About 20 data encoders have participated in the data entry activity. The data was entered in personal computers using IMPS (Integrated Microcomputer Processing System) software. Then, the data was checked and cleaned by four regular staff. Finally, the data processing activity was done by personal computers (PCs) to produce results which were indicated in the tabulation plan and this operation was done by one programmers. They will be used solely for reporting of aggregated information, and not for investigation of specific individuals or organizations. No attempt will be made to re-identify respondents, and no use will be made of the identity of any person or establishment discovered inadvertently. Any such discovery would immediately be reported to the CSA. No attempt will be made to produce links among datasets provided by CSA, or among data from the CSA and other datasets that could identify individuals or organizations. Any books, articles, conference papers, theses, dissertations, reports, or other publications that employ data obtained from CSA will cite the source of data in accordance with the Citation Requirement provided with each dataset.
