    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The RAAAP sample was designed to achieve the study objectives and establish bench mark indicators for the design and implementation of adolescent health project in six counties. Thus, the sample was not spread geographically in proportion to the population, but rather equally across the six counties (Bomi, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh, Lofa, Montserrado and Nimba), with a total of 30 Enumeration Areas (EAs), 5 per county. A total of 325 households were selected from the 30 EAs.

A fixed number of households (11) were selected using the households listing from selected EAs. The households and EAs listings were generated by the Liberia Institute for Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS). In each household, at least two eligible young persons aged 14 - 34 years were interviewed. A total of six hundred sixteen (616) young people were interviewed at the household level.

In addition to the questionnaire administration, focus group discussions were held with two hundred sixteen participants (216); young people (male and female in and out of school), parents (males and females) to generate qualitative information.

    Questionnaires

    One section - Household Questionnaire.
The contents of this questionnaires is based on generic questionnaires developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). In consultation with a group of stakeholders, LISGIS, NACP, Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare staff modified the RAAP generic questionnaires to reflect relevant issues for young people, family planning, HIV/AIDS, and other health issues in Liberia.

Given that English is the official language and widely spoken, it was decided not to translate the questionnaires into the vernaculars. However, many of the questions were simplified into simpler form of English that interviewers could use with respondents. A total of 616 questionnaires were completed and edited for processing and analysis. The CSPro computer package was used to process and analyze the questionnaires.

    Data processing

    Data Editing

About 10 data entry clerks, one supervisor and a programmer were recruited to process and analyze field data. Data entry process took ten days while analysis took one week.

The CSPro computer package was used to process and analyze the questionnaires. Each questionnaire was entered once and verified by generating tables and cross checking ages of respondents with other variables such as marital status, fertility, etc.
