    Series Information

The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) has been set up by the Government of India in 1950 to collect socio-economic data employing scientific sampling methods. The NSSO conducts regular surveys as part of its “rounds”, each round being normally of a year's duration and covering more than one subject of study. The surveys are conducted through household interviews, using a random sample of households covering practically the entire geographical area of the country.

The Governing Council of the NSSO decided to collect information on Persons Aged 60 years & above along with Utilisation of Medical Services in the 42nd Round Schedule 27. The field operations of the 42nd NSS round commenced on 1st July 1986 and continued up to June, 1987. The field work for the survey was conducted, as usual, by the Field Operations Division of the Organisation. The collected data were processed by the Data Processing Division of NSSO and tabulated by the Computer Centre of Department of Statistics.

    Abstract

The 42nd round Schedule 25.7 was devoted to an enquiry on 'Survey of Persons Aged 60 years and above'. The objective was to make an assessment of the benefits derived by various sections of the aged persons in the society in the area of thier health, economic conditions and retirement benefits etc. As the largest share of expenditure on social services goes to the area of education and health care, this enquiry was devoted mainly to the collection of informations and extent of the welfare of aged persons above 60 years. This survey was conducted during July 1986-June 1987.
