    Series Information

    The Well-Being of Older People Study is the second round of the survey. WOPS surveys are designed by the World Health Organization and the Medical Research Council of Uganda and implemented by the Medical Research Council of Uganda.

    Abstract

    The study objectives were:

    (1) Describe the roles, health problems (physical and mental) and social wellbeing of older people who are directly and indirectly affected by HIV/AIDS, with special attention to the effects of the introduction of ART

    (2) Develop recommendations for policy and practice that can be expected to improve the wellbeing of older people affected by or infected with HIV/AIDS.

    Notes

    The scope of the Well-Being of Older People Study includes:

    RESPONDENT and HOUSEHOLD CHARACTERISTICS: marital status, household headship, education, employment, household wealth status, access to water, electricity and sanitation facilities.
    HEALTH STATE DESCRIPTION: self-reported difficulties experienced in several domains of health (including self-care, mobility, vision, pain and discomfort, cognition, sleep and energy, affect, interpersonal activities), functional ability in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living.
    CHRONIC CONDITION and HEALTH SERVICE COVERAGE: self-reported as well as diagnosed experience with chronic diseases (angina, arthritis, stroke, hypertension, lung disease, diabetes, eye problems, oral health, asthma, and injuries).
    HEALTH CARE UTILIZATION and RISK FACTORS and BEHAVIOURS: use of health facilities as well as traditional remedies for illnesses experienced in the past 4 weeks.
    RISK FACTORS and PREVENTIVE HEALTH BEHAVIOURS: smoking, alcohol use and nutrition.
    ANTHROPOMETRIC MEASUREMENTS: weight, height, blood pressure (systolic and diastolic).
    CARE GIVING: Physical, nursing and financial care giving to adults and children in the household, care giving to adults who died in the previous 2 years due to AIDS-related deaths, satisfaction with care-giving role.
    RECEIVING CARE: Receiving physical, nursing or financial support from friends, family and the state, access to government cash transfers.
    HIV EXPERIENCES: experience of being HIV infected, experience of being on HIV treatment (side effects, support, access to treatment).

    Sampling Procedure

    Quantitative study
    The sample consisted of people aged 50 years and over, selected from existing databases.
    Five groups were selected, each with 100 participants of whom half were living in a rural area (Masaka district) and half in a preurban area (Entebbe). The groups were as follows:
    (1) Have an adult child who died of HIV/AIDS
    (2) Have an adult child who is living with HIV and on antiretroviral therapy (ART)
    (3) Have no child with HIV/AIDS and are not infected with HIV (comparison group)
    (4) Is HIV infected and on ART for at least one year
    (5) Is HIV infected and not on ART

    Response Rate

    In total 471 people were interviewed in the quantitative component: 193 in the rural district, 169 in the urban district and 109 in Masaka.
