Abstract | In this chapter, we provide an overview of the Moro Struggle in Mindanao, Southern Philippines involving, principally the Moros, and affecting the Lumad (or Indigenous Peoples) and largely Christian settlers. This is also called the Moro conflict or the Mindanao conflict. We trace the history of the problem across different colonization periods and administrations. In addition, we review the ongoing peace-building initiatives undertaken by the different sectors involved in the region – religious, academic, nongovernment organizations, people’s organizations, and communities. We end this chapter with our own suggestions for peace-building in the region, adopting a multi-dimensional and multi-layered approach to resolving the Mindanao conflict. |
