This is the first STEPS conducted by Botswana.

    Abstract

STEPS is a household-based survey to obtain core data on the established risk factors that determine the major burden of NCDs.

    Scope

    Notes

The following topics were included in the survey: tobacco use, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, history of raised blood glucose, history of raised blood pressure and lifestyle advice. Additionally, the following measures were taken: blood pressure, height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and heart rate.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

Using simple random sampling, 2 urban villages were selected out of a total of 7 urban villages and 6 rural villages were selected out of a total of 28 rural villages. A total of 105 enumeration areas (EA) were selected from across the 8 selected villages using simple random sampling to make the selection within each village. These EAs were distributed proportionally across the 6 villages, with larger villages having more EAs selected from them. A modified version of the Kish Method was used to select 2 eligible people from each household: 1 aged 25-54 and 1 aged 55-64. A household with no eligible respondent (vacant, new house, out of target age groups) was replaced by the next household. Once the desired sample size was collected for that village, no further interviews were conducted in any of the EAs within that village.

    Weighting

Partial analysis weights were calculated by taking the inverse of the probability of selection up to the level of the EA. These weights were adjusted for differences in the age-sex composition of the sample population as compared to the target population.

Different weight variables are available per Step:
    wStep1 - for interview data
    wStep2 - for physical measures
This allows for differences in the weight calculation for each Step of the survey as the age-sex composition of the respondents to each Step can differ slightly due to refusal or drop out.
