Sample Frame, Households [sf/hh]
The UNHCR Results Monitoring Surveys (RMS) is a household-level survey on forcibly displaced and stateless people. The objective of the survey is to monitor impact and outcome level indicators on education, healthcare, livelihoods, protection concerns, shelter, and water and sanitation. The results contribute to an evidence base for reporting against UNHCR’s multi-year strategies to key stakeholders.
The RMS can be implemented in any operational context. A standard structured questionnaire has been developed for the RMS, which can be conducted as a stand-alone survey or flexibly integrated with other data collection exercises. The data includes indicators collected at both the household and individual (household-member) level, and results are statistically representative.
This RMS took place in Malawi between October 2022 and March 2023. The population of interest included refugees, asylum-seekers and others of concern in Malawi, and the sample frame was taken from UNHCR's registration database (proGres). Data subjects were interviewed in person along with the verification exercise updating proGres.

The sampling strategy employed for the survey involved dividing refugee settlements into four zones based on cardinal directions, randomly selecting blocks within each zone, and systematically sampling households within those blocks using intervals determined by the total number of households, while for phone-based interviews, lists provided by UNHCR were randomized and respondents were selected proportionately by nationality.
