The Latinobarómetro study is produced by Corporación Latinobarómetro, a non-profit NGO with offices in Santiago, Chile, which has sole responsibility for the data.
The field work for the first wave of surveys of Latin America performed by Latinobarómetro was completed between May and June 1995, comprising 8 countries, i.e. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Since 1996, the study is conducted in 17 countries; Dominican Republic was added in 2004, completing the 18 countries of the Latin American world, except Cuba.
To date, 14 waves of surveys have been carried out, totaling 257,202 interviews. For the 2009 survey, 20,204 interviews were held between September 21 and October 24, with representative samples of 100% of the population of each of the 18 countries, thus representing the population of the region, which totals over 500 million inhabitants.
Latinobarómetro is an annual public opinion survey that involves some 19,000 interviews in 18 Latin American countries, representing more than 400 million inhabitants. Latinobarómetro Corporation researches the development of democracy and economies as well as societies, using indicators of opinion, attitudes, behaviour and values. Its results are used by social and political actors, international organizations, governments and the media. The executive director of the study is Marta Lagos.
The 2009 Latinobarómetro study was supported by a large number of organizations and governments: OAS (Organization of American States); CAF (Corporación Andina de Fomento); SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency); AECI (Agencia Espanola de Cooperación Internacional); and CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency). It is also supported by governments of the region.
The International Advisory Council of Latinobarómetro met in May 2008, summoned by ECLAC, to define the topics to be studied in 2008 and 2009. Accordingly, the questionnaire for 2008 contains a module on youth that introduces the theme defined whose results are reported in the report for 2008. The questionnaire for 2009 was drawn up in light of the two major events of the year, beyond the bicentennial and the presidential election: the economic crisis and the coup d’état in Honduras.
