Suriname conducted its Seventh General Population Census In 2004, through its General Bureau of Statistics (GBS). It was also the second census, legally under directions of the GBS since enactment of the new Statistics Act (S.B. 2002, no 97). The following six censuses were conducted before the 2004 census: 1921, 1950, 1964, 1972, 1980 and 2003).
Following a fire that took place soon after the 2003 census, on 25 February 2004 the Government took the decision to retake the Census (see Surname's Country Report or Census 2004 Coverage Evaluation Report provided under related materials).
