Health Survey [hh/hs]
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey was previously conducted in Botswana in 2001.
The Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2008 (GYTS) is a school-based survey that collects data on students aged 13-15 years using a standardized methodology for constructing the sample frame, selecting schools and classes, and processing data. The GYTS surveillance system is intended to enhance the capacity of countries to design, implement, and evaluate tobacco control and prevention programs. Funding for the GYTS has been provided by the Canadian Public Health Association, National Cancer Institute, United Nations Children Emergency Fund, and the World Health Organization-Tobacco Free Initiative.
The methodology:

The core module of the GYTS asks learners about their tobacco use and consumption intensity, and their use of smokeless tobacco products, and attempts to quit and relapses. The survey also collects data on their exposure to second-hand smoke, access to and purchasing of tobacco products, learners' knowledge of tobacco advertising and anti-tobacco messages, and their attitudes and beliefs about using tobacco.

A two-stage cluster sample design was used for the 2008 GYTS to produce representative data for all of Botswana. At the first stage, schools were selected with probability proportional to enrollment size. At the second stage, classes were randomly selected and all students in selected classes were eligible to participate. A total of 1,611 13-15-year-old students participated in the Botswana GYTS.
The overall response rate was 96.0%.
GYTS is composed of 56 "core" questions designed to gather data on the following seven domains. The questionnaire also allows countries to insert their own country-specific questions.
Knowledge and attitudes of young people towards cigarette smoking
Prevalence of cigarette smoking and other tobacco use among young people
Role of the media and advertising in young people’s use of cigarettes
Access to cigarettes
Tobacco-related school curriculum
Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS)
Cessation of cigarette smoking
The Botswana Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2008 consists of one questionnaire that is composed of 54 core questions.
