Abstract
This study analyzes the effects of child labor on the school attendance for children
ages 5 to 17 in Cambodia. Previous studies on the relationship between child labor
participation and school attendance in developing countries have produced mixed results,
but very few have specifically focused on the effect of working time on school
participation.
Using data from 2001 Cambodia Child Labor Survey, this study will test two
hypotheses: first is whether work status affects children’s school attendance likelihood,
comparing children who are working with children who are not working; second is the
examination of whether the number of working hours affects children’s school attendance
at full time.
The study will apply logit model to test the hypotheses and the models will
control for some factors affecting the school attendance which previous literatures have
shown. These factors include age of children, gender of children, household income,
urban-rural residence, father’s education, mother’s education, household head gender,
family size, and other kids in the family go to school.
