Abstract
We compare labor participation rates for men and women in Cartagena between
2008 and 2013. We examine participation rates by sex, age, education,
marital status and socioeconomic level with data from the Colombian National
Statistical Bureau (dane). Then, using a Probit model of labor force participation,
we estimate the probability that a woman participates in the Cartagena labor
market. As independent variables we use several standard set of explanatory factors.
We find that men, on average, had a participation rate 20% higher than
women and that education is a key explanatory variable.
